Disaster Recovery for Oracle

Former Member

Hi,

I am working on a backup and recovery strategy.

We have daily online brbackup (whole database online and redo log backup) using external backup program, symantec.

We would like to simulate a recovery, assuming whole hardware failure. We would like to use the online backup and recover on another new server with similar hardware spec and partition.

I have read thru the disaster recovery guide for oracle, it mentioned to install the database and sap software. My question:

1) If install the database and sap software on the new server, does it mean i need to generate a new solman key? i want to use back the same <SID> as in the old server.

pls advise.

thanks.

hi,

thanks.

Just to confirm, if i restore OS backup, does that mean i do not have to install the sap and database from scratch?

may i confirm the procedure for recovery on another server using external backup program:

- restore full OS backup

- brrestore -d util_file -b last -m full

- startup mount at SQL

- recover database

- alter database open

What is your OS?

What is your SAP product and version?

answer will greatly vary upon your answers.

Hi,

If planned to use OS backup/restore using windows, then you should have same hostname as the source system. Because sap depends on the hostname.

Best way will be to install SAP and database newly, then after that restore the backup and apply for sap license for the new DR server.

Since you told like SAP product is BI 7.0, do you have BI-Java also in the same system or its maintained seperatly.

Bcoz Java engine will not get started after backup restoration, bcoz of Dispatcher ID and Server0 ID.

If your BI system is ABAP+Java, best recommended way will be homogenous system copy.

Hope it helps

Hi,

ok, will use the same hostname.

yes, all abap+ java in the same machine.

May I check with you how to perform a homogenous system copy if total loss of the whole server?

we only have daily OS backup and daily online brbackup & redo log files.

Hi,

If you want to do Homogenous System Copy, you need a Export from the production system.

Steps in detail

1. Data Export from Production system with ABAP+Java

2. Copy the export to the DR server

3.Start the installation with Export taken, can get the system with old data.

Here the problem is to take export the system should be up and running.

In case the system crashes with hardware failure, follow this kind of process

1. Install SAP(abap only) and Databasebinary in the system

2. Restoration of Database with latest log files

3.Install Java Add-in components for existing ABAP System.

4, Import java components(customized roles r Par files)

Hope it helps.
