2. Why is it used ?

Platts is a provider of energy information around the world that has been in business in various forms for more than a century and is now a division of The McGraw-Hill Companies. Products include Platts Energy Economist, industry news and price benchmarks for the oil, natural gas, electricity, nuclear power, coal, petrochemical and metals markets. Platts uses bids, offers and trades to set the price for hundreds of opaque, over-the-counter physical oil and energy products every day. Platts pricing has been the benchmark for oil trading for generations. The president of Platts is Victoria Chu Pao.

Hi Santosh,

1.Platts are basically data providers used for price quotation data which can be maintained either manually or using using a remote connection by using external quotation interface. these external interface automatically makes real-time market data available for formula & average pricing and price agreements.

2.They are used for calculating the price on the purchasing side as well as on the sales side where the price are considered based on currency flucations within the time period.

3.Other Exchanges Quotation providers which provides financial information, such as Reuters, or Telerate. we have the Oil Market Report (OMR ), the European Oil Telegram (EOT) and others to determine the price of a material.

Thats only half the story, Platts are indeed providers of market based price quotes, but essentially the quotes are then used in formula and average pricing, transaction code OICQP should shed some light on the subject.
