I will try to make this plain and simple.

Coding mask is a methodology of segregating and structuring the investment programme.

Usually investment programmes are initiatives of the top management of any organization.

These are generally Annual based or (less prominent) 3-years or 5-years (in some cases).

These investment programmes are classified (in a generic sense) according to the funds that would go in to it (Inv Prog).

A company makes use of Inv Progs to achieve one of the following

1. Acquire / generate (create) assets

2. Achieve returns from investments (in terms of making use of the equipment procured)

A couple of classic examples of usage of coding mask would be as follows:

XX (year of the programme) - XXX (Heading of the investment) - XXXX (Inv Position ID)

OR may be

XX (Investment Program ID) - XXX (SBU ID) - XXXX (Inv Position ID)

Using the coding mask one can easily identify the investment which is being made / planned for.

Hope this information gives you insight about the usage of coding mask for Investment programme.

basically coding masks are set up so that objects only with certain length and starting character is used

also helps in object identification

simple e.g. date can be written as 050109 this would mean 05/01/2009 if the mask was DD/MM/YYYY etc
