Work Process Distribtion - Reference & Recommendations

Hello,

We would like to find some good information based on practical experience on how to optimally set up a system with a CI and several application servers regarding work process distribution and load balancing so we don't have to re-invent the wheel and we can validate what we have already done against other experiences.

Are you aware of a "white paper" or blog that discussed the concepts? We are more interested in the design considerations rather than how to perform the configs themselves.

Example of the kind of questions that we have:

We have adjusted the logon groups so that the CI is not logged on to by end users. Should we also reduce the work processes to a minimum on that server? What should the work processes be configured like (number of) on a CI where the system has serveral application servers?

Thank you.

Hi John,

Please refer Note 39412.

This note answers the following questions:

o How many work processes must and may be configured?

o What number makes sense?

o How can you see which processes exist and what they do?

o How do you set the number?

Hi,

IMHO, the only general rule is to have "enough" process of each kind for your specific use.

The problem is that the specific use may be completely different for each SAP customer and each system.

For exemple, in my company we have 2 production R/3 system with nearly the same database size.

One system has 4 UPD processes and 2 UP2 processes only on the CI server.

The second system has 16 UPD processes and 14 UP2 processes both on CI and DIA servers.

So you have to observe your system and tune it from the results of the observations.

It is a permanent process in order to optimize (or at least not degrade) performance.
