Hi PS gurus!
Can anyone explain me in details about WBS various viepoints with some examples:
You can structure the WBS from various viewpoints:
By phase (logic or process oriented)
By function (function-oriented)
By object (object-oriented)

Phase Based structuring
like as engineering, procurement, assembly. this type of structuring well suited for time scheduling and step by step execution of project.
Funcation based structuring
This structuing method may comprise WBs for individual assemblies of say elevator, such as motor, shaft, cabin parts, if you are using the project stock than those WBS eanbales you to keep separate stocks for your diff. assemblies.
By object (object-oriented)
Individual structure can contain single WBS for SD, Purchasing & production. they can be separeated by responsible cost centers. in reporting thsi type of structuring allows direct evaluation of cost portions to diff. org units.
I think,we should pay attention based on which aspects we would like to see our reports while structuring.

Take an example
Project definition: Construct a Gas Pipeline
Level 1 WBS: Construct a Gas Pipeline
Option1 - based on function
L2 Electrical
L3 HT
L3 LT
L2 Mechanical
L3 Static
L3 Rotary
L2 Civil
L3 Clearing Grading
L3 Backfill
Option 2 - based on phases
L2 Phase 1
L3 Clearing Grading
L3 Pipe Coating
L2 Phase 2
L3 Trenching
L3 Pipe Laying
L2 Phase 3
L3 Backfilling
L3 Restoration
Option 3 - object wise say project manager
L2 project manager Jack
L3 Pipe Laying
L3 Pipe Coating
L2 Project Manager Jill
L3 Clearing & Grading
L3 Backfill
L2 Project Manager John
L3 Trenching
L3 Restoration
As you can see the same project can be represented in different ways depending on the requirement. This requirement is usually finane driven as they dictate the requirements for the costing buckets (= WBS) that need to be set up
