Due to the takeover of Business Objects SAP has decided not to put the xSOP product into the market because Business Objects has a kind of a similar product. SAP is currently determining how both products can be merged into 1 product at taken to market. No more information is available at this moment on which date a new (merged) version is going to be in ramp-up or general available.
Just to add more to what you said, xSOP 5.1 is as bad as any new SAP products has been. It does not have basic functionalities like posting periods. It only supports months and SAP development team has agreed that they can not deliver this development until the next release...some time mid 2009. We had to scrap the project...
