Dears,
In my SAP systems one background job is running from a long time (more than normal time).
What could be the reason of it.
Please suggest.

Check whether the work process is running at OS level too. i.e.Check the pid of background process in SM50 with the one in Task Manager for existence and running.
select Job--->Check status in sm37 selecting that background job.

What does the background job log showing in sm37? Also check if all the background work process are busy in SM50. Check this and let us know.

you will need to monitor this job while it runs. create an SQL trace with ST05 and check if you see any SQL requests running for a long time.
SAP Version is-4.7
OS-Windows 2003 server
Database-Oracle 9i
Job logs are not showing any error and background WP are also available.
have you check ST05 as suggested earlier to make a trace on that job and find out which SQL request(s) is causing this to be slow?
