dear gurus
i have one production box
R/3 version 4.6c
kernel 4.6D sp 1913
DB version Oracle 8.1.7.4.0
OS version Solaris 9
1st QUESTION
if i want to do system copy to new box
with
R/3 version 4.6c
kernel 4.6D sp 1913
DB version Oracle 8.1.7.4.0
OS version Solaris 10 (changed from solaris 9 to 10)
do i need to do homogenous system copy or heterogenous ?
is there any issues between 4.6c and solaris 10 ?
2nd question
if 1st question above is not possible, I want to do homogenous system copy with
R/3 version 4.6c
kernel 4.6D sp 1913
DB version Oracle 8.1.7.4.0
OS version Solaris 9
after that i will upgrade Oracle to 10 and SAP to ECC 6, is it possible to use ECC6 and Solaris 9 ? or do I need to upgrade to Solaris 10 ?
thanks
Refer product availability matrix http://service.sap.com/pam
Oracle 10g is supported on Solaris/SPARC 9 and 10 using 4.6D_EXT 64-bit kernel.
Oracle 8.1.7 is not supported with Solaris 10.
So first migrate to10g/ Solaris10
Upgrade 4.6C to ECC 6.0

ok since Oracle 8.1.7 is not supported with Solaris 10.
the best approach is
new box :
install Solaris 9
install Oracle 8.1.7
install SAP 4.6c with export dump system copy from old box
upgrade Oracle to 10g
next step : do i need to upgrade to Solaris 10 first before upgrade to ECC 6 ?
can ECC6 run in Solaris 9 ?
thanks
Hi Markus
thanks a lot !
1. i know Oracle 8 is out of support, thats why we are going to upgrade
2. thanks for the information ! i forgot to check ECC6 in PAM only 4.6c
ok i am getting clearer with the process now..
so approach will be like below, please advice whether this is best approach or not

i have one production box
R/3 version 4.6c 64-bit
kernel 4.6D sp 1913
DB version Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 64-bit
OS version Solaris 9 64-bit
activities in new box
install Solaris 9 64-bit + patches
install Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 64-bit + patches
install R/3 version 4.6c 64-bit (with DB Load from dump from system copy, there is another option to move data file only)
update kernel to latest 4.6d before installing DB instance
upgrade Oracle 2 steps two Oracle 10 + patches
update kernel to 4.6dEX2 (in order to run with Oracle 10)
start SAP
upgrade to ECC6 sr2 + patches (sr2 because we dont want unicode, sr3 installation must be unicode)
am I in right track ?
thanks !!
Looks good!
> upgrade to ECC6 sr2 + patches (sr2 because we dont want unicode, sr3 installation must be unicode)
Yes - but this is for INSTALLATION only - if you do an upgrade you can use the SR3 CDs.
Be aware of the fact, that, as soon as Java applications (Portal etc.) come into place, you must have a Unicode backend.
Markus
wah another good information ! last question before I award point
is it confirmed ? upgrade can use SR3 CD ? I thought that SR3 add on it self must run on unicode ?
anyway the goal from customer is only technical upgrade so if they want non unicode to unicode version, maybe there will be another project. sizing also based on non unicode.

SR 3 installations don´t offer non-unicode, the upgrades however works.
In fact, it doesn´t matter. The difference between SR2 and SR3 is the number of support packages already in the upgrade. With SR2 you need to apply more support packages manually during PREPARE (see note Note 774615 - Support Package levels of ERP/ECC installations/upgrades)

Ok. Just keep in mind that if you customer wants a portal

yes i am aware of this. we do have plan to update the patch level to latest - 1

another project then.. yay..
thanks Markus ! people like you who want spend time and effort to help other people is really amazing !
Hello,
Steps can be even simpler..
You can make direct copy (use R3load) of your source system to Oracle 10g on Solaris 10. What you need here a 4.6D_EXT kernel. Note that 4.6C system can run on 10g/Solaris 10 with that kernel.
So no separate steps needed for oracle and OS upgrades.

Manoj

hi Manoj !
i am looking for possibility to reduce the steps, can you please kindly explain ur approach above ?

my assumptions (please correct if there is mistake in my assumptions)
i have one production box
R/3 version 4.6c 64-bit
kernel 4.6D sp 1913
DB version Oracle 8.1.7.4.0 64-bit
OS version Solaris 9 64-bit
activities in new box
install Solaris 10 64-bit + patches
install Oracle 10.2.0.4 64-bit + patches
install R/3 version 4.6c 64-bit (central instance)
update kernel to latest 4.6d_EXT or 4.6d_EX2 before installing DB instance
install db instance (using R3load dump from system copy
start SAP
upgrade to ECC6 sr2 + patches (sr2 because we dont want unicode, sr3 installation must be unicode)
Refer note Note 946141 - Inst. SAP Systems on UX/Oracle 10.2 with R3SETUP
This note will tell you where to download latest installation tools.
- I haven't tried 10.2.0.4 patch set with this installation tools personally. If it doesn't works (means if it gives error during the db creation post processing "catproc.sql"), then use 10.2.0.2 patchset. You can upgrade the oracle to 10.2.0.4 before upgrade and it is a simple process..
no idea why..may be they are updating it.
to download use the following path if using 4.6D EXT kernel..
Support Packages and Patches -> Additional Components -> SAP Kernel -> SAP KERNEL 64-BIT -> SAP KERNEL 4.6D_EXT 64-BIT
Then download kernel and 46DSR1_8-10002587.SAR ( Installation Oracle 10.2.0)
HI Manoj !
thanks for your help !
btw now I am doing the db export using R3SETUP (quite slow, I have optimize it using split SRT files method)
I have questions here..
when I do export I download latest R3szchk, R3load, R3SETUP, R3check, R3LDCTL
I download from
Support Packages and Patches - Archive - Additional Components - SAP Kernel -SAP KERNEL 64-BIT - SAP KERNEL 4.6D 64-BIT
R3szchk, R3load, R3check, R3LDCTL using SAPEXEDB_2364-10001132.SAR (Kernel Part II for Stack Q1-2008)
R3SETUP using R3SETUP_29-10001132.CAR
source system : Oracle 8.1.7 - R/3 4.6C - Solaris 9
my question is
target system : Oracle 10.0.2 with patches - R/3 4.6C - Solaris 10
later on when i do import to target system, should I use the same kernel when I do the export, or should I use the one from
Support Packages and Patches -> Additional Components -> SAP Kernel -> SAP KERNEL 64-BIT -> SAP KERNEL 4.6D_EX2 64-BIT
thanks !
