Hello everyone,

Can anyone explain the following storage types in detail. It would be great if you provide practical examples (What happens during actual putaway if we have these strategies are set up) along with good reading material. These are the following strategies in which I need help:

Bulk Storage Type

Next Empty Bin

Large/Small quantities included

Dynamic Coordinate quant quantity

Storage Unit Type

Manual Stock Placement

Open Storage

Along with these explanations please explain these settings in Storage Type configuration.

Addition To Stock

Round off Quantity

Full Stock Removal Requirement Active

Please explain with practical examples during putaway/ Picking.

Thanks in advance

Amar Singh

Hi,

For the following strategries are used for stock placement control:

  • Next Empty Bin: the strategy is used for stock placement control, which is particularly suitable for high rack and shelf storage, the system proposes the next empty storage bin according to the index of empty storage bins for putaway. The system generates this index of empty storage bins when a storage bin is created, and updates it every time there is a putaway or stock removal. The system automatically looks for a new empty bin for each storage unit type that is to be put away so there is no need for a capacity check in the storage type.

  • Dynamic Coordinate quant quantity: It is used in storage unit management for temporary putaway in so-called identification points; strategy R is only relevant for two-step picking.

  • Open Storage Strategy is suitable for storage types in which there is only one storage bin in each storage section. If you want to store different materials in this storage bin, you have to allow mixed storage. A corresponding storage type (Key 003) is preconfigured in the standard SAP ECC system.

  • Manual Stock Placement: If you leave the field "Putaway strategy" blank in storage type definition, that's the manual stock placement, the result is, every stock is moved to this storage type, you have to manually assign a storage bin in the transfer order, system can't do it automatically!

This one is used for stock removal control:

  • Large/Small quantities included: It's used for stock removal control and also goes beyond the boundaries of the storage type because it always requires a combination of two storage types. The first is the storage type for small quantities from which materials are only removed up to a certain quantity, the control quantity. The second storage type is the large quantity storage type and is used to remove quantities above the control quantity. To use this strategy, you must enter a control quantity in the material masters of all of the materials that are to be picked from the small quantity storage

type. The Control quantity field is in the Warehouse Management 2 view at storage type level. The large/small quantities strategy is particularly suited to fixed bin storage. If is also a good idea to define a storage type indicator for this procedure and then to create a separate entry in the storage type search table for this indicator. The small and large quantity storage types are included in a corresponding search sequence.

As to the indicators of storage type,

  • Addition To Stock: It's used to allow addition to the existing stock on the storage bin.

  • Round off Quantity: Quantity rounding is meaningful in combination with picking strategy "M" (large/small quantity). For example, if you want to pick pallet quantities, carton quantities or individual quantities from a chain of three storage types, you can accomplish this by defining the rounding quantity and control quantity in the material master record.

  • Full Stock Removal Requirement Active: Means that during stock removal the entire quant is to be removed from storage, regardless of the quantity required.

Hope these can help you.

Good day and nice weekend

Excellent answer Tao. Thank you very much. They are few clarifications regarding this thread, can you please explain them:

If we have addition to existing stock active, and the bin is full then how does the strategy work

If we have 100 PCS in bin and mention Round off quantity in material master as 100, so for a stock removal of 50 PCS, system actually refers to master data and removes 100 units ? Is my understanding correct. Please explain.

Thanks & Regards,

Amar

Hi,

  • You can use the addition to stock strategy as a lack of storage space. The system should choose a storage bin that already contains the material you want to put away, and actively try to add to stock. You have to either allow addition to stock generally or for a particular material in the stock placement control section. You also have to activate the capacity check. If you decide to allow material-dependent addition to existing stock, you have to set the corresponding indicator in the Warehouse Management 1 view in the material master records of all of the materials that you want to add to existing stocks.

If the storage bin is full, when next stock is coming, system will find the next empty bin and assign the bin to transfer order, if no available bin, you should give the bin manually in transfer order

  • As to Round off quantity, I agree with you! Base on your case, normally the round off quantity is equal to the full quantity on the pallet or other container, this procedure prevents the system from creating partial pallets unnecessarily and provides optimal management of the picking area.

Hope I can answer your question.

Nice weekend
