navigation between applications

Can anyone tell me if this can be done and how I would go about it?

I have an application1 in project1 that needs to call application2 in project2 and return when application2 is finished. I've tried the portal eventing, but I don't want trays showing nor do I want both applications visible at the same time.

Never could figure how to get the parameters across. Had to live with it.
