Error: Failed to receive scheduling status of external program

We are trying the options of calling a n "Externaa Command" or External Program" with in a SAP background job. Everytime the job fails to run the external command/file with that error.

While setting up the External Command, SAP's help say to create an event in SM69. We did that the file is never called. Same for the External Program, SAP's help says to provide the path to the program. We did that, still it never runs. We've tried so many options with / and \ and .cmd or .bat file. System Patch vs User path and absoulte pathc.

Does any one have any examples of calling windows OS commands from a SAP batch job? We are on SAP ECC 6.0.

Thank you
