Central instance + studio VS workspace

Is there (or what is) a difference between having:

a) A NW2004s Central instance(maxdb or ora) + NW dev studio (IDE)

and

b) A NW2004S Workspace (maxdb) installation

It seem to be mostly similar except maybe workspace adds java stuffs to the db (not sure)

Do i need b) to work with JDI or will a) do just as well ?

Either way would work. However, consider that option (b) is optimized for development, i.e, the Workspace version of the J2EE has some of the non-essential stuff disabled to increase performance
