Reagarding Variant configuration

HI

I am doing VC whcih got characteristics as "Density" value "INT" and subordinate values as 1001,1002,1003,1004

now i have to another charcteristics with pice and values as Rs.100, 200, 300

now in have to set a defalut value

which i have done like

$set_default ($self, price, '100) if density = INT the above is working fine as if it is only one value with no subordinate value if it is having subordinate values how to do write the procedure for this
