Hello All,
We are using EP 7.0 with BI 7.0 in two different unix system with SP
level 15 in both the stacks. Our issue is few month before we applied
the sp for abap(BI system) and JAVA(Portal system). No issue we faced
in the BI system.
After applied the SP15 for JAVA stack we faced lot many problem from
user and administration side (eg : customized Theme changed to
original , SSO expire(system received an expired SS0 ticket) ).
Now we are planned to apply the latest SP 17 for both prodcution
system. We need pre and post informations about the java patch(JSPM)
application.Like OS-files directory backup details, portal frontend
side,precautionary steps.
Is there any documents regarding this apart from help.sap.com.
Look forward to move ahead

Have you checked SPS Stack Guide for SP17?
It could be found at help.sap.com -> SAP NetWeaver -> SAP NetWeaver 7.0 (2004s)-> System Administration -> Maintenance* -SPS 17 . The guide covers pretty much any scenario about update of NW systems (ABAP+JAVA).
About: Like OS-files directory backup details, portal frontend side, precautionary steps.
All you need to do is backup your SAP systems (file system/database) before applying the patches. So you have an option to restore them before possible point of failures.
