Hi,
We are in the process of moving from hardware running Solaris 9 to hardware that will run Solaris 10. In the process we have an issue in that HP Jet Direct software we use to create, test and delete printers within Solaris is no longer supported with Solaris 10. For those of you who run Solaris 10, what tools do you use to manage your printers? We have 900 active printers in our ECC 6 instance with more coming.
Thank you,
Mike
We use CUPS to manage ~ 600 printers.
It has a nice web frontend to configure/manage the printers. We use it to print to HP, Kyocera and Océ printers, barcode printers (Zebra, Spectrum and others) for all languages (incl. chinese, korean, russian, polish...) and it supports the PPD drivers.
You can either compile it yourself or use http://www.blastwave.org to get a precompiled package.

We don't have a special support agreement with anyone. Since the software is open source we "fix" problems ourselves (we had to once in the past).
If this is too risky for you you can also use the Solaris' native spooler system. I can deal with network printers too. If you do just "raw" printing it's as fine as CUPS.
