Hi Mike,

The Distribution Model is only applicable to ALE interfaces. When using the Distribution Model, the BD82 transaction will automatically update/create partner profile definitions and create RFC port definitions as needed. However, these definitions must be created or modified manually in situations such as:

When you are not able to use the Distribution Model, you must manually create your partner profile definitions (WE20) and port definitions (WE21). Reference the SAP Online Library for additional information.

When using the EDI file-based method of IDoc creation, you will need to manually create partner profiles.

When modifying the Partner Profile parameters prior to production or to create partner profiles manually.

Partner definition is where you control both inbound and outbound EDI message. You specify which messages are allowed for which partners, which ports (WE21) are used, and when the IDocs will be pushed outbound to your EDI Solution.

Basically, partners are defined at two levels -- partner and partner message.

At the partner level, you specify the partner, the partner type (i.e., customer), and the default business user who will receive error tasks associated with this partner. At the partner message level, you define all the messages you'll electronically exchange with this partner. Here you'll specify the technical ports, message timing, the business user to notify if an error occurs for this partner and message, and other details.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Kiran Kandepalli.
