Hi Jivan,
Here is a short document for [SAP BEST PRACTICES PHARMACEUTICALS|http://www.getcertified.in/bp%20for%20pharma%20-%20smb.pdf].
Page No;- 08 of these document you will find the batch number should be kept internal. Via User Exit.
Other than this as per best of my opinion I will strictly recommend internal Batch number. In Pharmaceutical/Food are such industry where the product are authenticated by Batch Number. Hence the significance of Batch number becomes damn critical.
"To generate the batch number through some Robust and authenticated system", is one the core purpose to implement SAP in the industry.
Now though you are implementing such costly ERP having full flayed functionality, meeting with above requirement, and keeping the Batch number external doesn't sound wise.
- External numbering can cause the Duplication of Batch Number.
- External numbering will have chance of miss numbering the Batch number. E.g The Number range is set Alphanumeric, such A0XX8000 to A0XX8999. And Some one can miss spell it like "AOxx8003".
At the other hand internal numbering will not have this kind of malfunctions.
The only issue may occur with chances of 1% only, is "Skip" of Batch number.
In addition to it you may go to [FDA Forum|http://www.fda.com/forum/] for the same topic related Discussion.

Shyamal
