Hi all

I hope i am posting in the correct place.

Please point me in the right direction if i am not.

Well as you can see from the Subject i am a complete newb when it comes to SAP.

Here is my question and i need advice and guidance from you guys and gals.

I live and work in south africa

I have a job opportunity

Basically it is a company that currently have a contract SAP guy that maintains the enviroment

And they are looking for a permanent person (yours truly)./

So first there will be hands on training and then there will be formal training and then i will take over all the SAP duties.

They are a manufacturing company and i think they have a ERP solution.

I know basically nothing about SAP.

OK so will you guys advise me to go for this position or will i be way out of my depth and am i trying to take on too much here.

Here are my technical skills:

Microsoft Certified Systems Engineer Server 2003 - 4 Years experience

Microsoft certified Trainer - 2 Years as a trainer

Microsoft certified technology specialist: SQL server 2005 - 1 Year experience

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Hi,

I think you should try this opportunity.

Reason: They say they will give you training so I think it a great thing that you are getting hands on experience. There are so many people who get certified and have no jobs. But in your case you say they will train you and then give you the responsibilties.

My suggestion yes you should go for it if you are sure they are going to give training. You will initially have to do a lot of hard work to learn, then go to the SAP system(because SAP screens are different so you need to get familarised with the screens) try all that you have learnt so that you dont forget and you dont have only bookish knowledge. Also when you are going to try on the system you will get more questions/ ideas which you can go back next day / or get clarified from whoever is giving the training,.

I know that it will be difficult but if you do hard work , it will pay.

I am also an MCSD, MCSE and a MCDBA. I did a ABAP certification course and then had to wait for 4 months before I got my first SAP break.

Regards,

Narayani

I think it mainly depends on the levels of stress you can handle and the amount of available time for the hands on training. I certainly wouldn't take on such a huge responsibility without two or three years of experience at the side of a senior.

Target your first training on backup and recovery

Just my 2 cents.

Andre,

does the company have a support contract with a 3rd party company?

When the sh*t hits the fan will there be anyone else to help you resolve the issue(s) or will it be entirely upon your head??

If there is no other support available, then I personally (in your position) wouldn't touch this with a barge pole!

No amount of training or KT from the current contractor will prepare you for this situation!

If, however, there are other resources available to assist you (whether internal or external), then it sounds like a great opportunity for you.

Good luck!
