How many background processes is recommended for BI?

The default number of background processes seems to be 3 for BI. From time to time large jobs occupy all three background processes and small jobs are held up for considerable lengths of time. Our sever has as fast CPU and good deal of RAM, however our Basis team is not keen to increase the number of background processes without some sort of specific guidance on what an appropriate number of background processes would be. Note 39412 is the only information we could find from SAP on this topic but there are no specific guidelines. (e.g. 1 per 5GB of memory)

How many background processes is recommended for BI? Does anyone have specific advice on how many background processes we should set, or when they should be increased?

This can depend a bit on your landscape and load window.

I believe SAP's recommendation is to have at least 1 background process per processor, or a mutlitple of that, e.g.

8 cores = 8, 16, or 24 background processes, depending on processor speed and memory.

A good configuration case study on HP servers running windows is available at

Are you running just a BW central instance, or do you have multiple application servers?

Is your data loaded during a short overnight window, or are you a global 7x24 shop with data loads ocurring at all hours? We have a load window that runs about 1am to 6am. We toggle the operation mode on our servers so that we have fewer dialog processes and more background processes available during this laod window, then at 8am we reduce background and increase dialog. If we were loading data around the clock to support a global operation, that kind of operation mode change might not be desirable.

Number of background processes available on R3 and contention for resources on R3 can be a factor. No point in trying to run 12 data loads from R3 concurrently if there are only 6 background processes available on R3 for the extractors to run in.

In our environemnt we have 3 appl servers, setup with 26 dialog and 4 background processes during daytime mode, and we switch that to go to at least 8 background processes on each server at night, for a total of 24.

Note 621400 - Number of required BTC processes for process chains can provide some additional guidance on number of background processes needed to support your process chains.
