Creating a Virtual system from existing system

Former Member

Hello all,

well i am new to something i am doing now, i need to create a new virtual system from an existing system but i want to give it a different <SAPSID>. for example

my original seting are

SAPSID : ABC

system host name : ABCserver

MSSQL name : ABC

OS : Windows 2003 with sp2

now i want to create a new system hostname: XYZserver (using backups of ABCserver might be Windows full backup/SAP backup or MSSQL backup)

new virtual machine settign would be

SAPSID : XYZ

system host name : XYZserver

MSSQL name : XYZ

OS : Windows 2003 with sp2 (may be on different Hardware HD size, processors etc)

So my question is what is the best way to do this?

i will really appreciate your reply on the same.

thanks

Mandy

Hi,

You can do that easily with an homogeneous system copy but as you did not pointed to your SAP version I could not paste the link to the homongeneous system copy but you can go to service.sap.com/swdc and look for them. It is an easy process.

Good luck

Well My SAP version is ECC 6. homogenious copy is like building system from scratch or i should have windows 2003 (my version) , MSSQL 2005 server (my current version) and SAP ecc6 to do homogenious copy??

Thanks

For Homogeneous system copy you need to have your OS (Win 2003 sp2 in your case) and SQL should be installed also like if you are installing a new sap system but instead of using install option once in instgui, you choose system copy. Basically you will be asked SAPID, SAP system No. etc like in a normal install but instead of using Export DVD's you will use a backup from the other system that you want to copy. The install system will take care of changing DB name, SAPSID and all the necesary steps to get everything up an running with the new name.

The copy guide takes you step by step and as long as you do all the steps carefully you won´t have problems.

Good Luck

Hi,

Check following SAP Note.

Note 151603 :Copying an SQL Server database (homogeneous system copy)

Note 551915 - R/3 won't start after database restore or database copy

Hi thanks a lot for reply,

well i read those note but i have still few questions not answered.

1. I think this is weird question but i want to confirm how i can know which sap version is installed (i guess it is ECC 6 as i seen it from System>>status >>Component Version).

2. I have almost 5-6 packs of DVDs for SAP which include SAP Netweaver 7.0 2004s, SAP ERP 2004s SR1, SAP ERP 2004s SR2, SAP ERP 2005 SR2, SAP Business suite 2005.

So i am a bit confused what pack i should consider for installation.

3. Below are the package level i have right now of my current system and i want to restore the backup from same system. So my question is what are the add on component i need to install on target system like BI BW etc, how can i know which add-ons are installed on the system? and do i need to take care of package level at all or it will have no impact on restore or i should be having the same patch level.

i copied the package level from tcode SPAM. If need to install multiple component how should i proceed.

Hi,

1. -> You are using ECC 6.0

2. -> In case of system copy SAP ERP 2005 SR2 Master CD/DVD and kernel 7.00 CD/DVD (for Windows/SQL ) is required for your system, select the appropriate kernel CD/DVD for your platform.

3. -> When you are doing system copy it's makes the exact copy of the system on target system so no need to install additional ADD ON on target server.

Hello Kaushal,

thanks a lot for your answers, sorry for annoying you but i hv still some equestions (final set)

1. how can i know if SAP ABAP or ABAP+JAVA or JAVA is installed I hope its SMICM tcode but im not sure how to proceed there.

2. In SAPMMC i have two instances 00 and 01 on source system.

-for 00 i have following process

msg_server.exe

disp+work.exe

igswd.exe

-for 01 instance i have folowing process

msg_server.exe

enserver.exe

so my question is do i need to install two instance same as source system while installing SAP or i can skip this. if yes what would be the recomended way r should i follow installation guide.

3. If i want to go for fresh instaltion and then patch upgrade and then SAP restore will it be too difficult to do that way. i prefer this way but i know system copy is the exact and smart solution. can you tell me some steps to follow if follow this approach. what are the DVDs i need to install ERP 2005 SR2.

4. do we need to pay for "solution manager key " for building another system say for example a new training system or do we pay for users of this new system.

i hope with these answers i will be ready to go.

thanks

Mandeep

Hi,

1.

2.

-> You are having ABAP + JAVA system , for homogeneous system copy follow the system copy guide for abap + java system and look for DB specific procedure.

3.

if you want to perform the system copy to make exact copy of existing system then go for that , the target system having same support package level after system copy.

4.

Solution manager is required to generate the installation key , no need to pay for that but after performing system copy you need to request new license key for your target system.

kaushal
