PI vs ALE

What is the difference is between PI and ALE? I do not have PI but have a requirement of sending data between sap systems. What does PI give you that ALE does not?

I dont have PI and will not get it soon. I nned to extract data from SAP system and have the data put into a non-sap system. Looking for a non-ftp solution.

u can try ALE,BDC or LSMW i think right way to get answer is to post the same question in ABAP form.
