Usually when XI server level resources are to be utilized, at that time ABAP mapping is used. e.g. some table residing on XI ABAP stack.

Use of any mapping (ABAP, JAV, XSLT, GRAPHICAL) depends upon your skill and requirement. If you feel more comfirtable in ABAP then you can go for it, but 90% of the mapping is done using the Graphical mapping.
