Hello Gurus,
I am an BI consultant . But never worked on any upgrade BI Project before.
1) what is the role of technical / functional consultant in the upgrade project.
2) where does the Basis work start and where BI technical consultant work starts.
3) what is technical and functional upgrades
Since i am new to upgrades , could some body provide the basic process about upgradation to 7.0
and what are the exact steps in the real time . I am just confused where to start.
I am looking for the documents which helps in upgrading to BI 7.0 from 3.X.
Points will be awarded .
thanks
Magge
Hi,
Take a look at a this comprehensive material on the BI Upgrade. It contains the what, how, who and how to plan for an upgrade. It is a powerpoint, so you leverage what you want.
Hope you find it useful,
Dr. Berg

Hi,
I do not know the exact definition for your questions but I will tell you how it is handled in our company:
1) what is the role of technical / functional consultant in the upgrade project.
The technical consultant is responsible for basis-tasks like DB upgrades, installing new version, implementing new patches, OS, ...
The functional consultant should be responsible for all application related topict like cleaning up the system before the upgrade, setting new funnctionalities productive, user training in the new frontends, ...
2) where does the Basis work start and where BI technical consultant work starts.
For me basis works is hardware, OS, DB, SAP basis (basis tramsactions, e.g.); the technical consultant should be responsibel for all bi application customizing, set up new technologies (new authorization concepts,...)
3) what is technical and functional upgrades
The technical upgrade only cares about the technical process of the upgrade (bringing the system from 3.5 to 7.0). It is not necessary to use any new functionalities. You can still use BI with the 3.x frontends, you do not have to use new transformation, Poortal or new authorizations.
The functional upgrade also handles new functionalities.
I know this is just my opinion but maybe it is helpful for you.
For our upgrades we often had a look at the presentation in the sap media library:
It is updated very often and is a really good overview about all steps of an upgrade.
Regards
Frank

Hi,
These are some threads on Migration of Data Source from 3.x to 7.0.
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw70/helpdata/EN/fd/5b725f617ddc40b760cf5396bfcb5d/frameset.htm
Emulation, Migration and Restoring DataSources
http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04s/helpdata/en/43/682cacb88f297ee10000000a422035/content.htm
The DS 3.x is deleted, along with the 3.x metadata objects mapping and transfer structure, which are dependent on it. If a PSA or InfoPackage already exist for the DS 3.x, they are transferred to the migrated DS, along with the request that have already been loaded. After migration, only the information about how data is loaded into the PSA is used in the InfoPackage.
You have the option to export the 3.x objects, DS 3.x mapping and transfer structure during the migration so that these objects can be restored. The collected and serialized objects are stored in a local table (RSDSEXPORT). The migration is now eligible to be transported into the target system.
When you import the transport into the target system, in the after import, the system migrates the DS 3.x (as long as it available in the target system) to a local DS, without exporting the objects that are to be deleted. The DS 3.x mapping and transfer structure objects are deleted and the related IP are migrated. The data in the DS is transferred to the PSA.
Hope these help you.
