Browser caching and the portal

Former Member

Hi all,

I made some theme changes and we had to clear our browser temporary internet files (cache) to see the changes. This obviously won't work for the user community at large.

I found this on the net talking about Google Analytics, but it addresses the browser cache

Depending upon how your Portal and Load Balancers are setup with caching and expires headers, you won't push the correct version of the javascript file to the browser unless you update the file name!

Where to I look to find the caching and expires information for the portal?

What can I do so the user community does not need to clear their browser?

Thanks,

--Amy Smith

Hi Amy,

If I am understanding properly try out this from Portal:

Navigate to

1) System Administration - Navigation and there you can clear the cluster cache and Local cache

2) System Administration - Portal Content Directory - PCD Administration - Release Cache.

Hope this helps.

Cheers-

Thanks for the advice. I guess this is as good as it gets. Still can't find expiration time...

Thanks for your help,

Hi Amy,

You can press CTRL+F5 to clear cache and load latest changes.

Thanks James,

I can do that while I am developing the changes. However, can you imagine having thousands of users do that themselves on their browsers, both at home and at work. Try to make THAT work!

This must be controlled from the portal.

Hi,

To check this you ahve to use a http tool make sure that the cahce is clear:

For IE have the following tools:

HTTPWatch - http://www.httpwatch.com/

HTTP Analyzer - http://www.ieinspector.com/

Debug Bar - http://www.debugbar.com/

Thanks

Thanks and the point really is to not have to do anything on the client PCs. Plus I want to know how our portal is set up.

Other responses please...

I took a look around and found System Admin / Support / Services com.sap.portal.contentfetching service which specifies whether the browser cache is used or not. I could not find the location that specifies how long the files are held in the browser cache. Does anyone know this?
