When a notification is created manually, not via a preventative maintenance plan, is there a way to automatically add default tasks on the notification based on the notification type?

Adding of task automatically not possible since system doesn't know what actual task you performed. You can make use of catalog profile but that will also not automatic solution. It may help you in in easy choosing task.
