Hi Mani,
Have you created a system object and created an alias for the backend system?
Did you configure SSO?

Hi Mani,
All right, we would require SSO because, you would have to be authenticated as a user in the backend ECC system, else how will the system know that you are an authentic user or not?
More over, if you are having two different users in portal and ECC, you will have to do the user mapping again for the sake of authentication.

Since you have different usernames in both systems, you would need to go in for user mapping.
Properties in your system object to enable user mapping

Mani,
Yes, user mapping alone is not a solution for the issue we have right now.
SSO has to be done if you want to establish a connection between ECC and Portal.
Download the verify.der file from portal and import that in the ECC using the tcode STRUSTSSO2.
Check out the SDN, ample blogs and wikis on SSO.
User mapping is done only when the users are different on R/3 and Portal provided SSO is in place
Good Luck.
