Ultimately, you need to define a software component in the SLD before you can create objects in the Integration Builder: Design (XI 3.0) or the Enterprise Services Builder (PI 7.0+). So some time should be spent on naming conventions. The concept iis also useful for versioning any software changes making later software releases more easily identifiable and transportable.

Hi vij vij,
A2A message exchange is between software applications (programs) on disparate systems. These software applications or software components have interfaces, e.g., the structure of the data/ message that they send or receive (analogous to inbound and outbound parameters of a method/ function in software development.
Software Components are enhanced and therefore change to newer versions. The interface for these versions may differ therefore the atomic unit that exchanges messages is the Software Component Version.
Products are a collections of related software components.
Products also have versions therefore they are a collections Software Component Versions.

Kenny

Hi Vij
Product - A collection of all versions of a product. A product is a unit that is delivered, visible to the customer, and is installable and renewable. In an SAP environment, a product corresponds to an SAP technical component.
Example - SAP R/3 Enterprise
Product version - A particular version of a product.
Example - SAP R/3 Enterprise Core 6.0
Software component - A collection of all versions of a software component. Software components represent the reusable modules of a product. You can upgrade them or install patches on them.
Example - SAP Basis 6.20, SAP HR 6.20
Software component version - A particular version of a software component.
Example - in above example 6.20 is version for SAP BASIS
Software unit - A particular aspect of the product functions. It is a logical link between the product version and the software component version.
Example - SAP Enterprise Retail 1.10 which will contain SAP BASIS 6.20 etc.
Thanks
