"Graceful Shutdown" for server nodes?

Hi Folks -

We have SAP Portal implemented in a cluster with several server nodes (NW 7.0 SP14, Java only).

Occasionally we need to restart one of the server nodes - for maintenance purposes.

Does anyone know of a way to do a "graceful shutdown" of a server node? In this case the node would not accept any new work, but open sessions would continue. JCmon and NWA do not appear to offer this option.

Thanks in advance - Jeff

Hi Jeff,

I don't think that there is such a feature built in; it's also the question if this would make much sense, as the stopping would need at least the idle time for session timeouts (for example 30 minutes). And it doesn't help at all against sudden crashes of one server node.

For both scenarios, a http session failover feature exists. What is needed for this are that objects bound to the http session have to be serializable; see http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/EN/d7/57a4f0cce55143be5de3a6e4911186/frameset.htm and around for further details.

Hope it helps

Thanks Detlev - I'll look into the failover setup.

I agree - this would be of no help in a sudden crash.

In our case we had several KM-related components with startup errors - but only in two of our server nodes. The issue was not critical since we use only a small piece of the KM functionality. We could wait until "after-hours" to restart the server. So for us it would have been nice to furhter isolate the server node before restarting.

Best Regards - Jeff
