SLD is a server of XI and other systems in the landscape.SLD need not be in XI system. It should be in a landscape, You can have one Server as a SLD in your landscape. It is a central repository of all the components in a landscape

In a huge landscape, SLD will not be in XI server. But in a small landscape it may be the case. In many real time implementations, SLD is in the different server not in XI

SLD is central information provider for all xi components.it is in landscape.it is based on CIM(common information model

useful notes :

#764393 Configuration of the SAP System Landscape Directory

#768148 Using a separate SLD for XI

#939592 PI Usage Configuration versus Central SLD

#720717 Reduce the number of System Landscape Directories (SLD)

If you go thru SAP XI architecture diagram , you will get more info on this-

HI,

System Landscape Directory is the central repository of information about software and systems in the data center, expressed in the standard schema called Common Information Model, or CIM.

Hi

SLD architecture contains the

Products, Software Components, Technical Systems and Business System.

Product contains the Software components.

Each Technical System may have n no.of Business Systems.

System Landscape Directory is the central directory of system landscape information relevant for the management of your software lifecycle. It contains a description of your system landscape (that is, the software components that are currently installed) and a repository of software components that can theoretically be installed in your landscape (such as the software components available from SAP). Since this data gets updated automatically, SLD provides reliable and up-to-date system landscape information with as little effort for you as possible. In this way, SLD acts as a central information provider for SAP and third-party tools that use this data to deliver the services you need to keep your landscape up and running.

Go throht the following links to get more informatiion about the SLD https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/sdn/go/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/9e76e511-0d01-0010-5c9d-9f768d64...
