hi sap gurus! I need ypur help!!!
within my diploma thesis I worked out a table in which I evaluate the the functionality offered by the workflow in MDM and NPDI.
i have already evaluated it but i am really not sure about this. it is so difficult to get such specialized information about this topic.
so PLEASE, help me to evaluate the following funktions:
1. the user has a complete view on the whole process information from each workflow step
2. reducing the iintegration level
3. involving search functions and such for handling mass data (perhaps realizing with extra abap programs)
4. automating (e.g. automated start of the next step after finishing the one before or automated linking to the next work step in an other system)
5.individualized view on the own work
6. parallel workflow steps and changeable order of the staps (+ ad hoc workflow)
7. monitoring function
8. open communication plattform (everyone sees the work of the others and can push them to start working etc)
9. integration of own abap programs, eg. check data after each step
if you help me, so please tell me, if you evaluate fpr mdm or npdi workflow or both, and please use following scale:
no support (--)
minimal support
partia support
full support (++)
THANKS A LOT!!!!!
hope to hear from you!
janina
Hi Janina,
Please refer to the article on Workflow in MDM5.5. I hope it will answer most of your questions.

Hi Janina,
First of all I am a bit confused with what you are refering to....
My answers are based on the assumption that you are referring to MDM 5.5(as of SP3 Patch 1) and the Workflow associated with it(which is configured using Microsoft Visio). My assumption is also based on the 2nd post from you saying that you have already gone through the specified document.
<b>1. the user has a complete view on the whole process information from each workflow step</b>
+
If the user is owner of the workflow then he can view the entire cycle of workflow. If the user is the assignee of a particular task in the workflow, then he can only view the specific task that he is assigned to.
<b>2. reducing the iintegration level</b>
--
There is no support for integrating directly with any other workflows as of now. MDM Java API SP3 Patch1 released last week supports accessing MDM WF. So, this may be utilised to achieved this. I personally do not have much idea of possibility importing the MDM WF as a template into Portal UWL etc.
<b>3. involving search functions and such for handling mass data (perhaps realizing with extra abap programs)</b>
--
The current available MDM WF can be configured at table lavel only. Hence, searching may not be feasible as part of WF. Regarding external ABAP programs, MDM WF currently does not support calling/triggering external programs/functions.
<b>4. automating (e.g. automated start of the next step after finishing the one before or automated linking to the next work step in an other system)</b>
++
<b>5.individualized view on the own work</b>
++
Every user part of the WF can view his tasks in his/her own WF Inbox.
<b>6. parallel workflow steps and changeable order of the staps (+ ad hoc workflow)</b>
++
I could not understand the ad hoc WF, but, it is possible to have concurrent executions within a single WF, and at the same time, it is possible to trigger other workflows automatically(when WF ends) or manually (as part of any task).
<b>7. monitoring function</b>
++
Owner of the WF can view the status during the lifecycle of WF. Email Notications also help in monitoring.
<b>8. open communication plattform (everyone sees the work of the others and can push them to start working etc)</b>
++
As explained in previous points, the owner has the control of the WF and at the same time an eMail notification can be sent when the task has "timed out" etc. A WF task can be assigned to a "role" instead of user, so that all others assigned to the role can view the WF task.
<b>9. integration of own abap programs, eg. check data after each step</b>
+
As explained in point 3 above, it is not possible to trigger external programs. But, WF can have a step which can trigger "Validations" defined in the MDM Data Manager which will do the task of data checking .
Hope this helps,

Hi Janina,
For a pretty good introduction to MDM 5.5 workflow, see the following article: https://www.sdn.sap.com/irj/servlet/prt/portal/prtroot/docs/library/uuid/9180cbaf-0801-0010-f882-f2a....

Hi Markus,
I have already known this document...I worked out my solution based on it. But I am still not sure I understood it right. So, if any mdm specialist could evaluate my the functionality (with -,--,,+) I would be very very thankful! (So I had a comparison, you know)
But thanks a lot for your answer!
Janina
