what is the use of general item catagory group and item catagory group in MMR.

Hi,
General item category group and item category group have the same function but only difference is that General Item Category Group is maintained as a GENERAL which is application to all the sales org, dist. channel, plants.
Item category group's main function is for item category determination at sales order / delivery level. System will pick the item category via - sales doc. type + item category group + item usage.

Hello,
The system uses the item category group to determine the item category and proposes it in the respective document. Item category group is defined in the Sales Org View 2 of Material Master Record. Item category group determines how a material is behaved in the sales order.
General Item category Group is an extension item category
group. General item category group is maintained at client level, this field can be maintain from Basic Data View of Material Master. Thus in case item category group is missing, then general item category group is used for item category
determination.
