Crystal 2008 Export to CSV does not display character symbols

When exporting a crystal report (CR 2008) to CSV application using the Standard Export Mode, the CSV file will not display character symbols with umlauts (ex: ü, ö, ä). If I were to use Legacy mode as the Export Mode then the character symbols display correctly.

Is this a known problem?

Could this be a Registry Key value I'm missing?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Gerg,

This is a known issue. Following is the brief explanation for this issue:

1. For standard mode, the standard output result is using utf-8 to encode the strings. Export the report notepad instead of CSV to open the result file with utf-8 encoding and will see the correct characters. The default encoding MS Excel uses is NOT utf-8, it use Window (ANSI). So saving in Excel will not get the expected result. If you create a new excel file and choose import data from CSV file (already exported one), after that excel will pop up a dialog to ask you choose separator and encode method (you should choose utf-8) then the result is good.

2. For legacy mode, the legacy CSV exporting uses the CP_ACP (ANSI) as its codepage. So the result can be opened by the Excel directly.

This behaviour is by Design.

The workaround is export the report to CSV using Legacy mode.

Alpana
