May I suggest
Business Accounting Volume 1 by Frank Wood
From a personal point of view if you are employed writting FI reports as a BW consultant then a knowledge of P&L and Balance Sheets is an absolute must
Failing that - rather than rewrite Frank Wood - please just do some background on Financial accounting - profit and loss accounts and balance sheets or sit down with a FICO consultant for half a day and get him to teach you
Balance sheets hold the value of assets, liabilities and capital at a point in time
These are based on groupings of specific GL accounts - the other GL accounts are known as Profit and Loss accounts
Each year the profit for the year is taken off the profit and loss account and transferred into the balance sheet into the retained earnings accounts
Various reports can work off the balance sheet - workign capital and economic profit calculation, cashflow etc..
I really suggest you do some background reading
