Is it possible to rename an already created Web Dynpro DC which is created in DTR?

No, the only thing you can do is create a new DC, copy the sources and then delete the old DC.

Should I just filecopy the local files to the new DC, or should I take a different approach?

Just create on empty DC and copy the
web dynpro component from your previous DC.
you need to recreate model.
It will ask you to add files into DTR. say yes and your DC will be copied.
copying a model folders and wdmodelclassed from SRC folder will help you in copying model. but advisable is recreate model.
