Ahoc Query is used to get information from infotables. The transaction we use are SQ01,SQ02,SQ03
SQO1 for creating ADHoc query
SQ02-> Infoset
SQ03-> Info groups
Personal data list for employees in a particular organizational unit
Addres of the Emplyoee
Birthday list, marital status list, nationality list, etc.
Attendance/Absence list for employees in a particular employee subgroup
To get basic salary of the emplyoee
Address list for employees in a particular personnel area/subarea

It is a step-by-step guide. I have discussed the basics first, which you are talking about. You can ignore second half of the blog which is creating custom fields and some other advanced topis.
And yes, you need to do SQ03 first, then SQ02 and then SQ01.

Adhoc query is an easy-to-use reporting tool that uses the fields in the infosets. Infosets refer to sets of fields in HR infotypes. You can create your own infoset thru SQ02 and use in with the adhoc query tool.

Ad-hoc query is a reporting tool.
SAP gives some standard reports for each module. if the existing reports donot meet your requirements, you can create your own report using ad-hoc qurey. you do not need programming knowledge to develop an adhoc qurey. you will find the adhoc qurey under reproting tools in infosystems.
