Configurable material as a subcomponent of a nonconfigurable material

Hey Gurus,

We have a small situation in which we have a configured product 8000063 that was a bought material from a supplier but now, we are going to build a portion of this material in house but the 8000063 will still be bought from a supplier without the parts that we make in house now. So no subcontracting.

The problem is that we have a new top level material 8000375 that includes the 8000063 in the BOM of this material. On top of that, material 8000063 used to be shipped with 6548871, 6874356, and 6009876. These materials were restructured as components of the 8000375. the problem now is that we don't know what to do with the existing sales orders that were against the 8000063. The cogs are now dramatically different and do not reflect the total cost of the product sold for the material that is on the sales order 8000063.

The question is, is it possible to edit the sales orders so that we can included the 8000375 as the new top level material on existing sales orders and new sales orders but somehow mark the the configured product 8000063 so that we do not double count the demand if we put this as a line item on the sales order since it is part of the BOM of the 8000375?

We don't know if it is possible to have a configured material be a component of a higher level non-configurable material. Any advice that you gentlemen can offer on this would be much appreciated.

hello, friend.

please tell me if i understood your situation correctly...

1. you have sales orders with material 8000063, which you wish to edit to material 8000375;

2. you wish to reflect 8000063 as a component of 8000375 in new and previously saved sales orders; and

3. you wanted to know if configurable material 8000063 can be a component of non-configurable 8000375.

if my understanding is correct, let me hazard the following opinions...

1. you can edit your sales orders en masse by using VA05, and by going Edit > mass change > new material. you can try running MRP again to reflect the new materials requirement.

2. try #1 and check the sales order if 8000375 now explodes and shows 8000063 as a component (assuming the BOM was set up).

3. although i have not checked this, a material should be configurable if at least one of it's components is configurable.

please do give feedback if the above are helpful. this is interesting.

regards.
