File Level transport in sap xi

Former Member

Hi XI Experts,

I am involved in a file level transport for xi 3.0, can some one send me the steps on how it is done?

I am not using CMS and i have seen the generic weblogs on the overview of transports like "Overview of Transition from Dev to QA in XI" and "XI Software Logistics 1: SLD Preparation".

Any other documents other than these two will be greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Anirban.

Hi Anirban,

there is not much to do if you're using file transport

- IR you just export (from the menu) and import the same way in the target IR

- ID you just have to specify transport targets

(so names of your business systems will change)

Configuring Groups and Transport Targets.

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/ef/a21e3e0987760be10000000a114084/content.htm

also have a look at:

Transporting XI Objects

http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/93/a3a74046033913e10000000a155106/content.htm

if you're having one SLD

if not then you should also copy sld

so that all sld's data will be consistent

Hi Michal,

Thanks for helping me out !! By the way if you were to decide between CMS and file transport which would you use and why? I just want to know which is a better solution.

I found lot of guide on cms transport and also how to guides on cms.

Just asking your views.

Anirban.

Hi Anirban,

I cannot answer this question as I'm using file transports at all clients I've worked with

most probably we'll start using CMS in the future

cause it seems more like the "proper" way of transporting

but file transports are very easy to perform and easy to maintain too if you have a correct policy of storing those files

Hi,

Same issue here Michal, but with your expertise can you list some precautions that needs to be followed with file transfer, you said about copying SLD, Any other suggestions?

Another thing when we import idocs or rfc in xi do they automatically reflect in target after transport or we need to reimport them again. I guess it should be automatic.

Am i right Michal?

Anirban.

>>>you said about copying SLD, Any other suggestions?

this is only the case if you have many SLDs

as SAP suggests it's better to have only one, central SLD

...if you do then there's not much you have to do

just the configuration for the directory as I mentioned

file transports are numbered so you know which one was exported first, second (from the same scenario for example)

>>>>when we import idocs or rfc in xi do they automatically reflect in target after transport or we need to reimport them again

are you talking about the metadata or IR?

if metadata then I always do it in the PRD XI

I know that it should import itself with the first flow but still...

if you're talking about IR then no you cannot do

anything to your software component on the PRD XI

it's blocked for changes and it should stay like this...

Hi,

And what about QA servers in that are we allowed to reimport in IR?

Any clues,

Anirban.

hi,

if you have a QA then you have to specify 2 paths in the SLD (one for dev - qa and one for qa - prd)

you also have to export scenarios from ID from the QA

before importing them into PRD)

IR is done as usual nothing else needed
