Changing Hostname of SAP System

Former Member

Hi everyone,

We are in the process of standardizing our naming convention for the SAP servers. What impact does a server rename have on the SAP servers?

As far as i know that the hostname is stored in the default, start and instance profiles.

What are the activities to be performed to get the SAP instance working after the hostname change?

Thank you,

-Vinod.

The homogenous system copy Markus recommended is the safest route.

Then you'll need to go through your RFCs, saprouter settings, host files, etc. on all your systems that might connect to the old server.

And pray no one hardcoded the server name in any programs or used it in a variant.

The official way of changing a hostname is to do a homogeneous system copy.

If this is an ABAP + Java system it´s the only way of doing so.

Thanks Markus for your Reply.

I found an sap note 8307 which says changing hostname is not supported by SAP.

It also says development in this area is continuing.

I feel this may lead to inconsistencies since SAP doesnt fully support this.

Thnaks,

Yes - that´s what I meant basically. A system copy is the consistent way of doing that because the tools take care of all the settings.
