Satish
Ans 1.SAP ECC or R/3 is an execution tool, where as SAP SCM is only a planning tool. The real time execution takes placein R/3 only.
You can have an stand alone R/3 but you cannot have a stand alone SCM, it has to be with an execution tool.
Ans 2 yes, you have to have an execution tool but not only ECC you can usew any other ERP too.
Ans 3. SCM is diveded into mainly 3 parts.
1)APO
2)ICH
3)Event Management
4) Warehousing Management.
every module has got its own advantage over ECC.
Ans 4. SAP has got its own Industry Specific Solutions (the name "IS" comes fron Industry Specific). it can be said compareable to ECC but has got some more industry specific features.
Eg. IS - MIll
IS - Aerospace
IS - Retail
IS - Hotels etc.

Dear Satish,
1) ECC is the SAP ERP Central Component and you can connect to this the SCM system (Supply Chain Management).
2) yes it mandatory to have at least one ECC if you have SCM
3) There are several functionalities availble in SCM when compares to ECC. Please read http://help.sap.com/saphelp_erp60_sp/helpdata/en/80/ea89395eb58c4f9d0c3e837cf0909d/frameset.htm
and

4) Regarding IS Retail please read note 157755. Here you will find your answer how can you instantiate your R/3 system as a Retail system (SAP Retail).
