Crystal Report crashes with newer versions of crviewer.dll

We have a very outdated an unsupported application that uses the 8.0 Crystal Report engine. We have always had problems when attempting to view all "prompted" reports with newer versions of the .DLL (i.e. 8.5 below). We are moving to Vista next year from XP, and we would like it to use a newer version of the ActiveX control if possible. I've tried it with 11.x and it still crashes. Thoughts? How can I troubleshoot?
