we are assigning schedule line cat to Item cat.
Please tell me the major differences between the two.
for example in schedule line cat we have delivery block etc.
Hello,
Item categories are defined to provide additional control functions for the sales documents and thus meet the demands resulting from different business transactions. A separate control is defined for each of these item categories.
For example, the functions of a standard item are completely different from those of a free-of-charge item or a text item.
Item category controls:
1) Pricing, 2) Item completion in sales document 3) Item is a material or text item 4) item is relevent for delivery? 5) Relevent for billing .....etc...
Schedule Line Category: The schedule line category influences how such functions as inventory management, material requirements planning and availability check are carried out for each schedule line.
Schedule line categroy controls:
1) Should a customer requirement be reported to purchasing or production? 2) Should an availability check be carried out?
3) Is the schedule line relevant for delivery? 4) Should a delivery block be set automatically for the schedule line? ...etc.

Thanks for all the replies.
from where will the SLC will know the delivery date
and the quantity of the material.
while creating the SO we are giving the delivery date
, from where the slc will come to know whether in this date
we can have the material ready or not.
suppose we have give 13 sep. In that date f material is not
there how come slc will know that material is not there
in that date , and how it proposes the next available date.
for some item category i seen SLC as CP what does it mean.
when we will have CP.
Hi,
Schedule line cat is maily using for delivery order creation.
we need to assign schedule line cat to each item category.
using schedule line cat, system will understand when will particular item will deliver and how much quantity will deliver on same date.

1) Item Category
When you create a sales document, the system determines the item category for an item according to settings in the item category determination table for the sales document type, item category group, item usage, and higher level item.
Item categories contain instructions about the attributes of the line item to which they are assigned. Review the standard sales document item categories for product selection. If you decide that these do not meet your business requirements, for example if you require that pricing be done at the sub-item level rather than the main item level, create new sales document item categories.
2) Schedule Line Category
The schedule line category controls whether schedule lines in delivery schedules are relevant for planning and/or delivery.
The schedule line category depends on the item category of the corresponding item and the material requirements planning type (MRP) of the material. The MRP type of a material is specified in the material master record.
Schedule line categories are proposed automatically based on values set in the appropriate table. You can make some manual changes to the entries in the sales document but you cannot change everything. When you enter another schedule line category, the system checks whether this category is allowed.
