Hello Experts,
I have 7 years of experience in SAP Technical mainly in ABAP, Interface technology with ALE/EDI/IDocs, Workflows.
How best career shift in MDM considering i have not worked in SAP XI or BI and have a very little knowledge of XI.
Is SAP MDM Certification a good option to start with?
Thanks in advance.
Hi Karai Lou ,
Let me make u clear that MDM does not require any coding. It is configuration.
MDM is implemented in few companies. It has not started at a full fledge.
HP has MDM technology.
For clearing MDM certification, I guess if u read the PDF docs, it is enough.
MDM is good as oppurtunity wise (MDM resources are rare) as well as career wise(good salary). I would encourage u to start MDM career.

Hi Karai,
Here I want to take you through the real ground. As far as you are an ABAPER, It won't create much difference here at MDM side.
But if you with XI and BIknowledge it will really help you. And if
you know some Data Related stuff Like Quality,Governance you will get an edge here. As per MDM is now with BO(Business Object) which is inclined towards Data Quality.
As far as certification is concerned First take some Basic knowledge n will go for this.
Hope it helps.

Hi Karai,
Yes MDM is a very hot module. It completely new in market. You may aware that Mater Data is very much important to take the right decision in Business. High quality master data improve operational efficiency .Unmanaged master data notoriously effect Business. So many companies are trying to implement MDM to increase data quality and very few certified MDM Consultant are there in market.
So going for MDM is good decision. It is true that this technology is under development. Reecently MDM 7.1 is coming in the market with advanced fetchers and it will be more stable.
For MDM no prerequisite are there. But you know ABAP and definately it will be added advantage for you. XI knowledgr also good for MDM.
You can go for integration (MDM-XI. MDM-BI etc).
Thanks
Dola

Hi Karai,
To take a plunge into MDM after having a background of Abap is not at all a bad idea.As SAP MDM is a part of the netweaver stack's information management with abap as the interface language so knowing about related and interlinked technolgys always helps in expanding your growth.
As far as taking mdm certification is concerned you will need a good background of the subjcet before you give it a try unlike Abap you do not readymade study material on MDM and also a lot of questions will be on integration scenarios as MDM is used with other systems in the landscape and this kind of knowledge will not come easily without practice.
So taking up MDM as a career is definitely fruitful in the long run and for certification it depends on how much background knowledge you have on MDM and how fast you can pick up at the moment. But being MDM certified will definitely help in getting the required edge.
Hope It Helped,
Thanks & Regards

Hi Karai,
As rightly mentioned by Deepankar, in additon I would like to mention that MDM certification will be right boost for you to start your career in MDM.
MDM is a tool which involves a lot of integration. There have been many ABAPers shifting to this field as MDM is a hot cake right now. Myself being one of them.
You can always use ABAP Knowledge in MDM in the form of ABAP APi's.
XI skills is also an added advantage if you know it. However, you will genarally always have XI consultant supporting you in a project.

Hi Korai,
I have almost 2 years of MDM experience and previously , i was an ABAPER. i think shifting to MDM is a good decision but certainly if you have functional knowledge and handled data related issues in past and have undergone data migration kind of things then it will certainly give boost to your MDM career.
Yes you can very well start with a certification.
Hope my suggestion is helpful.

Deepankar.
