PI 7.0 Design Question

I am running NetWeaver 7.0.

What is the best design for creating a scenario where a CRM/SRM/etc system calls a standard BAPI in ECC? I have read about the point-to-point option once a customer has 7.1, but we are not there yet.

I was thinking about having "CRM ABAP client proxy" -> PI -> "rfc adapter to ECC". All interfaces synchronous.

Is this the best design?

If you want to use XI then definitely go via the way you suggested(Proxy-XI-RFC)

besides that you can directly do ALE configurations for these scenarios but that wont be via XI.

Am I correct in assuming that using PI instead of ALE is the recommended future direction of SAP?

Wouldn't I also need to use an IDoc if I used ALE?

Yeah,atleast i would try to leverage maximum use of XI/PI in all my integration interfaces.
