Partially Counting Physical Inventory Documents

Former Member

Currently our sites are encouraged to fully count a Physical Inventory document within the same business day. However, it is possible to partially count and post a document. Just wondering if there are any negative side effects to partially completing a count document in SAP? Does a partially completed document lock anything in the system for those articles on the document?

Thanks,

Nicole

if you set a posting block for the items that are on the counting doc is up to you.

you decide that when creating the document.

But doing an inventory count while there are physical movements for the materials that are included in the counting document is certainly not good practice and can lead to extra differences

You usually ensure that there will be no phyiscal movements in the location, and with setting a posting block you make sure that there will be no postings allowed in SAP.

if you had set the posting block for the document, then the posting block is still active for the items not yet counted.

If we wanted to allow partial counting would you recommend checking the Freeze book inventory balance checkbox? By its definition this would capture the book inventory balance when the document is created and would not be affected by subsequent movements for that article. Is that correct?

this is in general correct. But it covers only the SAP side .

It is in general ment to count immediatly after inventory creation, you just delay the difference posting and allow continuing work AFTER the physical count.

it is not meant to delay the counting. If you delay counting then somebody may already move/issue/receive materials inbetween the time of PID creation and counting. Then you cannot anymore compare the count with the book inventory, as posting the count would be a root cause for differences.

This is clear no, for above reasons.
