WAS - since when does it exist?

I know the role of the WAS in Netweaver.

But may someone help how old (year) the SAP Web Application Server is and since which release it is part of the SAP System? And maybe you can also explain, if the role in the system was the same as today in Netweaver or if there were big changes.

I just read that the WAS is in a first place part of the SAP system since R/3 Enterprise (4.7) in the year 2002. Is that really true?

Yes, the first WAS was 6.10. The next was 6.20. I believe that SAP R/3 4.7 runs on 6.20, not sure if it runs on 6.10 as well or not.
