Hey experts,
could you please give advice on how licensing works for Windows? Is there a relationship between SAP users or systems and used CALs?

By definition every device connecting to a Windows server needs a CAL. However, neither the OS nor the SAP system "counts" them.
Depending on which kind of clients you have (Windows XP/Vista OEM, Volume licenses etc.) you have a CAL included.

The situation is this, we are thinking on buying Windows Server 2008 Enterprise, how can I know how many CALs should I acquire as well?
Check your client licenses. If you use Vista, depending on which license you have, the CALs may already be included.
