signing the certificate

In case of SSL Certificate installation on SAP J2EE Engine.......

*.csr file has to be sent to certificate signing authority(CA).

CA will then send you the signed certificate.

So here I want to understand, what is the meaning of signed certificate ??

what operation this CA is duing on *.csr file ?? What is the significance

of signed certificate ?? why we need signed certificate ??
