Hello all,
I've read through similar threads, but none seem to have posted answers.
When printing Adobe forms, my client has asked that the reader not open.
When using a frontend device, set up as frontend, I've checked the box to not ask for frontend printer selection.
I've also set a default printer on the users' windows frontend, and defined their defaults in su01 with output immediately.
Oddly, when using all of these options together, I'm getting hex at the printer. This occurs despite having the PDF1 device type assigned to the printer definition in SAP.
Otherwise, when using the reader pop up, I can print just fine.

Assigning the device types for PDF was actually the problem. Seems that table TSP0b is set up to use specific device types to send a PCL stream that ends up formatting the PDF.
