SLD backup or export

Quick question,

In SLD administration, what is the purpose of "export" and "backup" options??

For take a backup version of SLD do we need to take "Export" or " Backup? And will a import of the .zip file taken during "Backup" retore back to the older version??

I am getting a little confused here..Any help..
