DropDownByKey and Blanks

Hello all, I am developing a webdynpro application and I am having an issue getting the DropDownByKey working in the fashion I would like. I understand by default the appear with the Blank space select if their is no selection in them. In a number of them I am defaulting them from the backend. Some of the them I can not default to a value...

I have done some searching and found some posts about the cardinality and selection setting on the type. I have set cardinality to 1..n and the selection to 1..1 but I still have blanks select in the drop downs.

I was wondering if anyone has any other suggestions??

I am using SP14 of the j2ee and NWDS.
